Moissac Art déco

With Bordeaux, Moissac presents one of the most important collections of Art Deco style buildings in the South-West of France.

March 1930, the eastern side of town was flooded by a 9 meter wave which destroyed entire districts. Mud brick houses built on bare earth collapsed, leaving 120 dead and hundreds homeless. Through international solidarity, subscriptions and anonymous donations. Moissac was quickly rebuilt, by architects from Toulouse, using strong and inexpensive materials in the current fashion inspired by concepts such as the rationality and functionality of spaces : art deco post 1930s.

This style combines masses and bold geometric forms : prismatic shapes, pyramidal pediment…. Symmetry apparant in the composition of the facade and the delicacy of decorations and friezes.
